About Eleanor

Hello! I am a violin teacher with over 4 years of experience teaching more than 200 students of all ages and levels. I trained as a classical violinist and have performed in orchestral, chamber, and solo contexts, and I bring that performing experience into my teaching — particularly in my understanding of what it feels like to prepare for and deliver a performance under pressure, and what students need to develop in order to perform at their genuine best rather than below it. I teach students from their very first violin lesson through to advanced performer level. I prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity grade examinations at all grades, for music college and conservatory auditions, and for orchestral and chamber music playing. I also have extensive experience teaching adult beginners and returning players — people who learned as children and are coming back to the instrument after a gap — for whom I have developed a specific approach that builds efficiently on what has been retained while addressing what has been forgotten. My teaching is patient, musically rich, and technically careful. I believe that every student can develop into a genuinely musical violinist given the right instruction and the right amount of dedicated practice, and I have seen this belief confirmed repeatedly throughout my teaching career.

Violin is one of the most technically demanding instruments in the orchestral family, and teaching it well requires a deep understanding of both the physical mechanics of playing and the musical demands that shape how those mechanics need to function. I approach both simultaneously from the very beginning, because students who are taught physical technique without musical context develop mechanically competent but musically empty playing, and students who are taught musical ideas without adequate technical foundation cannot realize those ideas on the instrument. My technical teaching focuses on the foundations that support everything else: left-hand frame, finger placement, intonation, bow hold, bow distribution, and tone production. I am particularly careful about intonation from the earliest stages, because poor intonation habits are notoriously difficult to correct once they are established, and because the ability to hear and correct one's own intonation in real time is one of the most important skills a string player can develop. I develop this skill explicitly through careful listening exercises, scale work, and slow practice with attention to the relationship between hand position and pitch. Bow technique receives equal attention: I teach bow hold in a way that is relaxed and ergonomic, and I develop bow distribution, bow speed, contact point, and pressure in ways that produce a range of tone colors and dynamic levels. Music theory — reading, rhythm, key signatures, basic harmony — is developed alongside practical playing throughout, so that students develop the ability to understand and learn new music independently rather than depending entirely on me.
