About Abed

I am a dedicated and experienced junior doctor currently located in Southampton. I possess a range of qualifications that reflect my commitment to medical education. These include a postgraduate qualification in Medical Education (Cardiff University) as well as The MRCS diploma (membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England), along with my enrolment in a postgraduate certificate in Surgery from the RCS. My teaching experience is diverse and impactful. I took the initiative to establish and organise a few teaching programmes at my NHS trust for medical students and junior doctors, providing valuable educational opportunities for aspiring doctors. Additionally, I successfully coordinated a local teaching programme specifically designed for final-year medical students, supporting their transition into the medical profession. Furthermore, I have served as an OSCE examiner for medical students, contributing to their assessment and development.

Find out more about Abed

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in medical education flourished during my early years in medical school. I observed a significant contrast between "good" and "average" tutors and their impact on my understanding of various subjects. This observation ignited a passion for effective knowledge sharing. Over time, this passion naturally drove me into private tutoring, where I could witness firsthand the transformational effect of personalized guidance on students' learning journeys.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I possess expertise in several undergraduate subjects, with a specialization in Anatomy, Surgery, and Internal Medicine. Alongside this, I provide OSCE exam preparation and practice sessions, informed by my success in passing these exams on my initial attempt with the Royal College of Surgeons and the General Medical Council. My genuine enthusiasm lies in discussing intricate anatomical structures, surgical techniques, and medical conditions. While I don't have any specific dislikes, I acknowledge that certain areas can be challenging due to their complexity. Regardless, I approach each topic with fervor, collaborating closely with students to conquer any obstacles they encounter.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Certainly, my role model was a professor who simplified complex concepts and held early-morning sessions when clarity of mind was at its peak! His dedication to accessible education deeply inspired me.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Effective tutoring demands expertise, empathy, and adaptability. A solid understanding of the subject, coupled with empathy for students' struggles, allows for tailored guidance. Adaptability ensures the teaching style matches each student's learning preferences, fostering a comfortable learning environment.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my junior doctor years, I guided struggling medical students and new junior doctors through complex surgical procedures. By simplifying steps and providing personal support, I witnessed their confidence soar. This reaffirmed my dedication to transformative one-on-one teaching.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Navigating the ever-evolving medical landscape can be challenging, requiring creative communication of intricate ideas. However, these challenges motivate me to refine my methods and simplify complex concepts for students.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in both teaching and contributing to medical education. Guiding future doctors and staying connected with medical advancements brings me great joy and fulfilment.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof?

Beyond my cheerful responses, my dedication as a junior doctor, along with qualifications in Medical Education and Surgery, set me apart. I've organized teaching programs, offer OSCE exam preparation, and passed all my exams on my first attempt with high scores. My tailored approach, accommodating scheduling, and commitment to helping students excel highlight my devotion to their success.
