About Boris
I've ended up as a "jack of all trades" because I love learning so much. I draw and paint, I play music, I write programs, I act in plays, and do photography. My favorite thing is to break a new skill down into fundamental components and to iterate on them until they become natural. This is what I teach my students as well. I take tutoring quite seriously, I've been tutoring for the last 10 years, around 1000 hours per year. I've seen pretty much everything that shows up in your classes, and all of the typical mistakes that students make (though I'm sure you can still surprise me). I have a master's degree in education, and have passed all of the qualifying examinations for California high school single subject math teachers. I keep my lessons fun and engaging, and I never judge you for not getting something or having a hard time. My goal is not to make you love math, but to give you the freedom to never worry about it. If you learn to love it and become a genius, that would be nice too.

I learn and teach like a completionist, leaving no stone unturned. I think that understanding a concept is only the beginning. To really be successful in math, you need to comprehensively investigate all of the particulars, quirks, and oddities of a concept in practice.
Taking exponential functions as an example, after understanding the concept of "repeated multiplication", we would answer all of the questions:
"What if the BASE is negative? fractional? one? zero? etc...?"
"what if the EXPONENT is negative? zero? fractional?..."
"If it IS a fraction, what happens then the numerator is odd and the denominator is even? Does that even matter? (it does)"
"What happens if the numerator is even and the denominator is odd?"
"What if they're both odd? (Can they both be even?)"
"What if the exponent is irrational? imaginary?"
"What if two exponential functions are added together?"
"What about Subtracted? Multiplied? Divided? Composed?"
"What does the graph look like? and how do you transform it?"
"What are typical applications of exponential functions?"
"What are typical test questions asked about exponential functions?"
"Are there any particular values that are worth memorizing?"
Each of these questions would give you new insights into the concept, and get you ready for whatever might show up on your examinations. My goal is to get you ready for 100%!

Hi there ! My name is Nurlan. I currently teach Mathematics at Mathnasium of Mountain View/Los Altos.
I met Boris in 2017 at Foothill College. Then, from early 2018 I began working with him at Mathnasium Mountain View/Los Altos where we both were teaching Mathematics .
He has an extraordinary talent of teaching Mathematics of all level, starting Mathematics for Kindergarten learners and till High Schoolers. Boris likes improving his ability to explain concepts in different ways so his learners always remember how to solve the problems from their Mathematics homework.
I think he knows how to take responsibilities with challenging students in terms of encouraging them to love Mathematics through solving problems from easiest to the hardest ones.
I’ve known Boris for 25 years and he’s been a teacher from the beginning. He has that deep, foundational knowledge which is so rare. He doesn’t just show you how to find the right answer - he teaches you WHY it’s right, and reveals the logic behind the process.
Boris is passionate about math, programming, photography, art, and many other things — but, most importantly, his excitement is infectious.I highly recommend Boris as a tutor. He has a gift for explaining complex concepts in a clear and concise manner. He is a patient, kind, and always willing to go the extra mile to help students succeed.
