About Syed

My name is Syed S., and I’m from Burtonsville, MD. I began my education at Montgomery College, earning my associate degree, and completed my undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). I am currently a third-year medical student at AUA College of Medicine and pursuing my Master's degree alongside my medical training.

I proudly served in the United States Army for three years. In addition to my academic background, I am a certified personal trainer, a former lifeguard, and hold current BLS and CLS certifications.

I have extensive teaching experience, having tutored and mentored medical students in Years 1 and 2 for the past two years. During my time at UMBC, I also worked as a tutor for General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry and assisted faculty as a teaching assistant. I continue to mentor pre-medical students, providing support with test-taking strategies, SAT preparation, nursing coursework, and college-level science courses.

I am highly familiar with major exam resources such as Kaplan, AMBOSS, UWorld, USMLE-Rx, and NBME exams, and I focus on simplifying complex material to help students build confidence and succeed.

I have been teaching medical students from Year 1 and Year 2 for the past two years. During my undergraduate studies at UMBC, I served as a tutor for General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry and worked as a teaching assistant alongside my professor.

I am also a mentor for pre-med students and currently teach at Varsity Tutors. I offer support in areas including test-taking strategies, SAT preparation, nursing school coursework, and college-level science courses.

I am highly familiar with leading exam prep resources such as Kaplan, AMBOSS, UWorld, USMLE-Rx, and NBME materials. I also hold both BLS and CLS certifications.

My approach focuses on simplifying complex material, building strong study habits, and helping students gain confidence as they work toward their academic and professional goals.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in health and education began when I lost 140 pounds and transformed my life through discipline and learning. As I moved forward with my studies in medicine and public health, I found real fulfillment in helping others understand complex topics. Whether I was guiding classmates through science material or helping clients make healthier choices, tutoring felt like a natural extension of my purpose.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach subjects like biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, and exam prep for the MCAT and USMLE. I love turning complex science into something that actually clicks, using real-life examples and practical breakdowns. One of my favorite topics is nutrition and how it ties into everything from cellular function to chronic disease. I'm not the biggest fan of content that relies heavily on memorization without application, because I think true learning comes from understanding.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, Dr. Onye Okere really inspired me. She's a pediatrician I worked with who mentored me early in my career. Her ability to teach with both kindness and clarity showed me that being a great teacher means more than knowing the material, it means creating a space where students feel safe to learn, grow, and ask questions.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A great tutor is patient, adaptable, and listens more than they speak. You need to be able to read the room and know when to challenge a student, when to simplify, and when to just offer encouragement. I also think being relatable and keeping things light when needed helps build real trust and engagement.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Back in med school, I helped a classmate who was seriously struggling and ready to give up. We worked together every week, using visual aids, practice questions, and pep talks. That student not only passed but eventually started tutoring others. That moment made me realize tutoring isn't just about academics, it's about showing someone what they're capable of.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

I've dealt with challenges like ADHD, time management, and burnout, especially while juggling clinical rotations, MPH coursework, and multiple tutoring jobs. But these experiences helped me build systems that work and taught me how to stay focused and resilient. They've made me more empathetic and resourceful as a tutor.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Absolutely. I'm passionate about helping people become the best version of themselves, whether that's through learning, lifestyle, or mindset. I love teaching, but I also love running marathons, advocating for mental health, and supporting underserved communities. For me, it's all connected: empowering others through education and wellness.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof?

I show up with experience, energy, and heart. I've lived the struggles my students face, and I know what it takes to overcome them. I combine evidence-based teaching with empathy and real life application. I don't just want my students to pass, I want them to believe in themselves when they do.
