About Davies

I believe that learning French is most meaningful when it connects to a student’s personal experiences and ambitions. In my lessons, I create an immersive environment where language is both a tool for communication and a gateway to francophone cultures. I focus on practical language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—through activities like dialogues, debates, and creative projects that encourage students to express their own ideas in French. Grammar instruction is contextual and integrated seamlessly into communicative tasks, so students learn verb tenses, agreement, and sentence structure as part of authentic language use rather than isolated drills. Cultural exploration is woven throughout my teaching, featuring francophone history, literature, cinema, and current events to provide students with a broad perspective and deepen their motivation. I leverage technology to enhance pronunciation practice, interactive vocabulary building, and digital collaboration, allowing students to engage with the language beyond our sessions. One memorable achievement was guiding a student to produce a short film in French that combined storytelling, vocabulary, and cultural insights, which boosted their confidence and linguistic competence. Ultimately, I aim to inspire students to see French as a living language they can use to connect with people and ideas worldwide, fostering a lifelong appreciation and curiosity.

My teaching philosophy in French focuses on building a strong grammatical base while emphasising meaningful, communicative practice that reflects real life. I begin by carefully explaining essential grammar elements—verb conjugations, noun-adjective agreement, pronouns, negation, and sentence structure—breaking down complex topics into clear, understandable parts. However, grammar is always integrated with practical use: I encourage students to immediately apply what they learn through conversational exercises, role-playing daily situations like ordering food or giving directions, and writing tasks that simulate authentic communication. This approach helps students see grammar as a functional tool, not just rules to memorise. Lessons are interactive and student-focused, inviting learners to describe images, share personal stories, and discuss future plans while naturally reinforcing vocabulary and grammatical concepts. I use visual aids and pattern recognition to clarify language structures and conduct regular reviews to ensure retention and build confidence. Cultural immersion is vital: I incorporate French films, songs, literature excerpts, and discussions of traditions and holidays to help students appreciate the language’s cultural depth. A highlight of my teaching was guiding a student struggling with French literature, using patient explanation and regular conversational practice to transform their confusion into curiosity and enjoyment. Technology is a valuable tool in my teaching toolkit, with interactive quizzes, listening exercises, apps, and customised homework assignments facilitating practice beyond class and enabling personalised feedback. Ultimately, I want students to see French as accessible, engaging, and meaningful, equipping them with language skills and cultural insight for lifelong communication and appreciation.
