About Mark

Hi! I recently graduated from the University of Oxford with First Class Honours in English Language and Literature. I've been tutoring for over three years, working with students across a range of levels to help them improve their grades and achieve their goals. While everyone learns differently, I've always found it mutually rewarding to delve into texts together and explore new, interesting ways of interpreting them.

English

English is a subject where you can’t just teach a student to get through their exams without first building a strong foundation of critical thinking skills. Students that read independently and take an interest in their work tend to flourish. However, it can be difficult to develop a love for the subject in large classes where the priority is establishing a general sense of a literary work, rather than pursuing a student’s own interpretation of what it is doing and how it works.

This means there are considerable benefits to individual tuition, where a student can tease out and develop their own reasoning, a process that builds independent thinking skills that will serve a student far beyond their English studies. By working on overcoming the gaps in their understanding, students usually begin to find enjoyment in the subject too, and higher grades are awarded to those that are able to demonstrate this combination of their thought and interest. Having benefitted from the Oxford tutorial system myself, I’ve seen firsthand the value that focused tutoring can bring and I’d be delighted to help other students find their grounding in the subject.
