About Yusuf

I am deeply passionate about English Literature and want to inspire both a love for the subject and the confidence to engage with it critically. I see English as much more than an exam subject: it develops the ability to think critically, communicate ideas clearly and approach complex questions with curiosity.
As a current UCL Comparative Literature student, I have the opportunity to study literature at a high academic level, and I want to pass on both the skills and enthusiasm I have developed along the way. I particularly enjoy helping students discover that literature becomes much more rewarding once they have the tools to understand and analyse it for themselves.
I also understand the pressures that come with academic study, having only recently navigated them myself. Alongside teaching, I aim to be a supportive and approachable mentor — someone students can feel comfortable asking questions, seeking advice from and learning with. Ultimately, I want my students to leave not only better prepared for their exams, but more confident, curious and capable as students.

I begin each programme by assessing the student's current level, strengths, weaknesses and individual goals. I then create a tailored plan focused on the areas that will make the greatest difference to their progress.
My lessons are structured, engaging and skills-focused. I use carefully prepared PowerPoint presentations to introduce and consolidate key ideas, alongside close analysis of the texts on your syllabus. I break complex literary concepts into manageable steps and help students develop the ability to recognise patterns, construct sophisticated arguments and apply their skills to unfamiliar questions — rather than relying on memorised answers.
Essay writing and exam technique are central to my approach. For online students, I use a live shared Word document to plan and develop essays together, allowing me to give immediate feedback and demonstrate how responses can be strengthened in real time. We will work specifically on approaching different question types, selecting evidence, analysing language and structure, and building clear, convincing arguments.
I also want my support to extend beyond our scheduled lessons. I aim to be an approachable tutor that students can turn to when they need an extra perspective — whether that means sending me an essay plan, a paragraph or an occasional practice essay for feedback. I believe this ongoing support can make a real difference, particularly in English, where regular feedback is one of the best ways to develop.
I maintain a progress record for each student, tracking the skills we are developing and setting clear targets for improvement. I also keep parents informed about their child's progress, areas for development and what we will focus on next.
As a current UCL Comparative Literature student, I bring a very recent perspective on academic study, revision and essay writing. My resources and techniques are current, and I aim to help students develop not only the skills needed for their exams, but the confidence and independence to apply those skills beyond them.
