About Lazara

My motto is: A teacher is a great guide for students if she/he teach with passion, dedication and love but, more important, if that teacher is able to sow the seed of inspiration and motivation in his students.

When I started teaching 30 years ago, I never thought how far my career as a teacher was going to be. I was 19 years old, just graduated from " The National Music School" in Cuba, La Habana. To get my first job as a guitar teacher I had to play again others players and the board of directors granted me the position. In a country where the guitar is the national instrument, where the population know very well either by playing or listening the guitar, in theaters, on the streets, homes, restaurants, public concerts etc. To become a guitar teacher it is really challenging because almost everybody know the instrument very well or at least are familiar with the most traditional songs in which the guitar is used as a principal instrument for accompaniment. Guitar teachers in Cuba have to be real connoisseurs of the instrument.
My first course teaching was the most difficult to manage different students with different personality, brain, hands, physical condition, emotion, talent and different perspective. It was crucial to be in love with them otherwise I wouldn't have been able to help them individually, because in music, every individual is an inner world. I took them inside the fantastic world of competitions, master classes given for great Cuban and foreign professors, concerts and Festivals. One of the most relevant in my country was" The Guitar Festival" sponsored by Leo Brouwer where some of my students performed in 2009 in the theater" Amadeo Roldán".
Since 1993 until now I have taught several generations of musicians that I feel so proud of. Seeing them growing as professionals and as human beings is something very gratifying. I have been living in US for 10 years, I became American citizen and have worked for some companies as a music teacher since my arrival from Cuba. At " Paganini Music school" and " MultiArt" , both located in Newark, New Jersey. Also I was a former substitute teacher at " The Board of Education of Union City", New Jersey, I teach on " Outschool" and recently have opened my own studio called " Bona Fide Music Studio" in Newark , New Jersey.

As a performer I am very active. I play as a soloist and with my husband in our duo called " Bona Fide". We have done our first CD " Doce Cuerdas" produced by a Cuban American composer with 12 Grammy nominations Yalil Guerra. I recently finished my Master's Degree under the guidance of Dr.Celil Refik kaya. I am the fist Cuban American winner in Marku International Guitar Competition 2022 and have won two talent competitions from NJCU.

My method is very didactic, beginners can learn in a brief period of time different tools to be able to apply them in any song or classical piece. I always start teaching the correct posture of the body and hands. From the first class I encourage my students to play from the first position easy chords like C, Am, G, D and simples ascending/ descending arpegios, free and rest stroke. later, I plan to teach bar (proper use of the finger one in left hand), diatonic and chromatic scales( asc/ des), slurs ( asc/desc), chords( in different positions). Students can apply each of these tools inside every lesson that I take from the great Cuban method " Guitar Method I". It is a method very well designed for beginners. There are three more books of this method for levels II, III, IV. In each method are incorporated beautiful and attractive classical lessons with a wide variety of styles.

To those students that are in an advance level and want to improve interpretation and style concepts, I also can help according to my experience of playing and teaching.
I have demonstrated my good method as a professor for more than 30 years with great results in my students, some of them became great professional musicians and I'm looking forward to see the path of those I have at this moment.

I always demonstrate with my guitar any explanation I provide in front of the student. I think it is the best way to explain any detail whether it's technical or musical .

NOTE: This class is very special for those students that have decided to make classical guitar as a career, I assure that you will be in a good hands.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

My First passion for music started when I was 4 years old in my native town in Cuba. I was one of the students elected to sing at a graduation ceremony in my primary school. It was my first time singing in front of the entire school, professors and the executive. Later, after a rigorous test I had to pass to prove my musicality, I was one of the few students selected to study music at the Music School of my Province and it was my first contact with the instrument that later became my favorite.
Watching my former guitar professor performing, it was so inspirational, seeing him playing the different and complex styles in classical guitar. It became one of the most challenging things to me, because of the difficulties of the technique the instrument imposes on the interpreter but at the same time beautifully exposed by my professor, I felt captivated by the guitar and his playing.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

There are many styles and musicians in my list of preferences that I love to listen to every day. Classical music like opera, symphonies, small formats like quartets, trios, duets, of course classical guitar etc. Also, I teach a wide variety of popular music in my studio, so that I can say if a music is well done with good taste and good musical elaboration, it doesn't matter what kind of style if it is a music that touches me, I accept and appreciate it.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

In my opinion every level has its own difficulties but I think the most difficult is when I teach kids. For more than 30 years I have been teaching young students from 5 years old and up but not one has the extreme dynamic of being more challenging than teaching kids. On the other hand, it is the most beautiful retribution when you see them growing and becoming professional musicians. It is emotionally something so special that only experienced teachers can experiment for decades.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

From my experience playing guitar and piano, the most difficult is guitar, it is really very challenging because of its nature of being a string instrument. All the string instruments are by far more complex than others in my opinion. The guitar in particular has 6 strings which should be played with precision and good sound quality, this is something that can take years for the players to perfect but because I like challenges I took the harder way of challenging myself since I was 10 years old. This is something that I am very proud of.
  • What are your keys to success?

My keys to success are Constancy, Passion and Inspiration.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

There are more than three in my list of my favorites musicians but because I love Music History and the illustrious maestros who left a deeper impression from the past to nowadays. Johan Sebastian Bach, Ludwig Van Beethoven and Federic Chopin are and have been the most remarkable in my life as a musician. I consider them and others in the past, the major reason why I love music and I feel very grateful for their existence and the legacy they left for us.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Remembering my academic years. I was a very enthusiastic girl, I loved all the music subjects such as solfeo, music theory, music history, chamber music, I felt so inspired by all my music professors. I loved to participate in Festivals, national guitar competitions, concerts attendance, reading, performing as a soloist ,ensembles and singing in choirs. I can say that my teenage years in attendance at the three music schools I went to was the most beautiful experience of my life. Every day was so enjoyable and a unique anecdote to tell.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I will say that my little touches that make me a Superprof in music are my teaching passion, my patience, my hope in every student and my enthusiasm for giving my knowledge to them.
