About Noah

I am a student of Anthropology at Queens University Belfast, and a short fiction writer/poet in what remains of my free time. I achieved A* in English in both my GCSE and A-levels, and was awarded the prize for excellence in English Literature at my school, as well as a scholarship to my sixth form.

Working with me you won’t be talked down to. I’m patient and I promise you I’ve dealt with worse. I’m passionate about this and I’m just lucky to get to share that with anyone.

School was tough for me, and I found a haven in my English studies - as they gave me a platform for self-expression and self-awareness that was hard to come by elsewhere, and has proved vital in every subsequent stage of my life. The books I studied then, and the meanings I drew from them at that formative age are very precious to me. I can trace the responses I had to first reading Steinbeck, Joyce, Shelley, and Whitman to the person I am today. So much of my being, my personality, my morality, my decision-making; was forged in those pages, and being given the encouragement to explore my personal interpretations of their words was a gift that has never left me, and one which I believe any child should have access to.

About the lesson

I adopt an individually tailored approach for each student I work with. English is the most personal of the subjects you will cover in school- and allowing students freedom of interpretation and expression is vital to their success in the subject. We are not simply working to pass an exam- we are equipping ourselves with the tools we will use to navigate the world for the rest of our lives. Will we be convincing, passionate, personable? Will we hold people’s attention when we speak? There are a thousand different people we may become - and so more vitally than working to pass a test, we are working to become confident in our voices, confident in how we articulate ourselves, and confident in the ideas we bring to the world. I want to create a learning environment centred around a mutual exchange of ideas - equipping students not merely with the knowledge for academic achievement, but confidence in their own unique perspective. Every single one of us has a distinct understanding of the world - and nurturing an awareness that each of us has a voice worth hearing is essential to my understanding of teaching. I have as much to learn from my students as they have to learn from me - and I feel that operating with this mindset creates an environment in which students will be more effectively motivated, as their ideas will be given respect and they will see the value in the work that we do together.

I work in hour-long slots, and will deliver lessons to any students who feel they could benefit from my techniques, however I would say that those between the ages of 12-16 have the most to gain from my approach.
