About Samuel
I graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy as having been fencing captain for three years, four years prior not a captain. Fenced as a B class sabre fencer, rated by the US Fencing Association. I competed in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) as a court fencer in the round; gladiator style fencing, if you will. I've studied, practiced and learned kenjutsu from Grand Master Masayuki Shimabukuru-Hanshi, having practiced for 17 years before beginning to teach for myself. Practicing kenjutsu for a total of 26 years.

We will start with dry fencing. I'll gauge your abilities from footwork, stance and posture to distancing abilities, form and reflexes. Just to start.
We will focus primarily on footwork and balance in the first half of our lessons with swordsmanship taking the majority of the second half.
Footwork and reflexes are everything and so there will be heavy focus on making sure you don't trip yourself up.
Should you prefer to learn real life fencing "in the round" I can teach that as well and it will be a bit more open form but the fundamentals are necessary and inescapable.
In the case of kendo; I teach Kenjutsu so don't expect to be wearing full bogu and competing in tournaments. I will teach you to use a katana starting with a shinai (bamboo sword), then bokken (hardwood sword) and after a long time of learning etiquette and blade-work we will move onto tameshigiri (mat cutting) and Iaido (art of blade movement) with a real katana.

Great conversationalist. Hes got a lot of experience and is very open to learning things if he didn’t already know something. His philosophy seems to be that anything is possible. He taught me a lot about….well, a lot! Originally I went to him to learn kendo but next thing I know is that I’m picking his brains about psychology and history and now I’m interested in playing music. I’m a former student of his. He asked me to send this to help out his profile. I never paid for his help but he gave it to me anyway and he’s always a phone call away.
Took the time to cater to my individual needs. I wasn’t able to learn karate in a class and it felt too much like I was being pushed into competition but Sam was able to teach me what I needed and wanted to know and even after finishing the program he’s there if I need him.
