About Iain
I have spent most of my time as a teacher in Years 1 and 2, and I think that has helped me to teach better as children of that age need to be taught very carefully! I also taught Year 4 for a year and very much enjoyed writing examples of a soliloquy from Boudicca's soldiers and a Norse myth. The children enjoyed them too and were inspired to excel when writing their own.
I spent eight years as a full-time writer/communications professional before retraining as a teacher six years ago, working in a range of industries including sports writing, politics and finally in a historic garden in central London. Becoming a teacher, particularly during my stints in Key Stage 2, has helped refine my knowledge of grammar.

I have taught literacy across key stages as a primary school teacher and consistency is key. We begin with a 'starter' to recall previous learning that can be built on during the lesson. Then, depending on what stage of the writing cycle the lesson falls, the input could range from a hook, to illuminate the subject material being taught, or practising new learning such as adverbial phrases and changes in tense in upper Key Stage 2. The lesson would end with a writing activity.
For early reading, I have experience with a number of different phonics schemes including Little Wandle, Essential Letters and Sounds, and Read, Write, Inc. Phonics lessons follow the required steps from Phases 2-5, dependent on the child's reading level.
