About Julia
Books were my first love. As a kid, I would stay up way past my bedtime to read books by the dim light of my alarm clock. In high school, I had an English teacher to turned my love for books into a passion for literature. She inspired me to become a teacher. After all, what could be better than talking about books all day?
In my time as an English teacher, I taught a wide variety of literature, from Shakespeare plays to YA graphic novels. I’m a firm believer that if you don’t like reading, you simply haven’t found the right book— or maybe the right teacher to give you just the tool you need to make it click. This belief has allowed me to connect with students from all kinds of backgrounds, and help reluctant readers find books they love and reluctant writers to craft essays they’re proud of.

I taught high school English for four years before moving to Scotland to pursue a master’s degree. While I am loving being a student again, I miss teaching and working with young people! What I have that other tutors might not is professional pedagogical training and a teaching certification. My experience in the classroom gives me all the knowledge and skills I need to help your student succeed.
I specialize in essay writing and improving student understanding of literary and nonfiction texts. I have an arsenal of writing and reading strategies, including easy-to-use graphic organizers to plan out essays, thought organizers to track thinking while reading to check for comprehension, and kind maps to help deepen understanding of a text. All of these tools can be applied to any text in any subject and can be tailored to the students needs and interests.
