My approach varies with each student; I believe tutoring should be designed to address the specific needs of each student that are often unaddressed within the broader education system. I determine what the ideal lesson plan for a student is after an initial meeting where we discuss the student's ambitions: what specifically they want to improve on and any time-sensitive targets they may have.
After the initial meeting, I would propose a specialized syllabi to address the needs of the student. If, for example, a student who routinely struggles with essays wishes to improve, I would ensure every lesson would address a specific element of essay-writing skills. For example, I often offer exemplar essays to students who struggle to conceptualize how to structure essays and walk them through how to replicate the methods in their own work.
Beyond the practicalities, I also offer strategies that are applicable across numerous subjects. I also prioritize accessibility as a tutor, exploring a range of techniques to ensure I address the needs of neurodivergent students and students with English as their second language.
