About Valery

Hello! My name is Valery, and I am a fourth year nuclear engineering student hoping to do a masters in nuclear physics or astrophysics. Apart from having studied various physics concepts in my classes, I enjoy learning about them on my own time to obtain more in-depth knowledge of the material.

I believe that true knowledge is demonstrated by being able to explain the concept in simple terms, without using long words, jargon, or unnecessarily complicating the material.

I have years of experience tutoring students in math, and my goal is for them to achieve true understanding of how to solve problems and of why they solve them that way.

From my experience, math (often used in physics) is best described as the language of science, and even the students who feel the most hopeless about the material can learn it exceptionally well if they approach it that way. Likewise, even the top performing students often have gaps in their knowledge that they have filled with memorization rather than understanding.

No matter what the level of the student is, I can help identify those knowledge gaps, and fill them with a strong foundation of understanding.

I will have succeeded as a tutor when the student no longer feels the need for our sessions, and will be able to move forward with their studies by reasoning their way through the material based on the footing gained by our work together.

I offer two types of sessions: student guided and tutor guided with pre-prepared material.

Student Guided Sessions: $30/hour. These sessions are about helping the student with material that they are struggling with in class or on their own. The student brings material that they'd like to cover during the session, and if needed, I will provide material to expand on the concepts.

Tutor Guided Sessions: $50/hour. For these sessions I will prepare the material based on the student's requests (e.g. "math prep for computational physics"). This includes the basic material that is expected to be covered by the topic, expanded material that will make it easier to understand the topic, and personalized homework sets targeting the student's weaknesses or areas of interest.

I have years of experience studying various levels of physics, with everything from general high school physics, to particle physics, to relativistic physics. I do not know everything there is to know about physics, otherwise I would have won multiple Nobel prizes, but I do know all the material taught in high school and most university courses.

Having years of experience tutoring math, my goal is for my students to genuinely understand the material. I aim to describe every concept as simply as possible, and I will explain it in multiple ways until I find what resonates with the student. After a few sessions I find that even those most opposed to the material will start to enjoy the sessions.

My typical student will do 2 sessions per week, and has access to all our lesson notes through google drive. I can give out homework and practice problems if requested, with up to one homework file per week for no extra charge.

For parents, you will get an update on your child's progress after each session, with a summary of their strengths and the areas we will improve on in following lessons.

Send me a message - I'd love to work with you!
