About Olivia
I first fell in love with French through music and films long before I ever visited a French-speaking country. That early fascination led me to pursue a B.A. in French Language and Francophone Studies, where I immersed myself in grammar, phonetics, literature, translation, and cultural history. Over the past 7 years, I’ve taught learners from many different backgrounds—school students, adults returning to language learning, and people preparing for travel, exams, or work—and I’ve seen how empowering it can be when someone realizes they can communicate in another language. When I teach, I try to create a calm, welcoming atmosphere where students feel comfortable speaking, even if they are unsure. I know that fear of making mistakes can hold people back, so I encourage them to see errors as helpful information rather than something embarrassing. I use clear explanations, lots of examples, and realistic practice scenarios to make grammar more intuitive. I also try to bring in cultural elements—like songs, short texts, or anecdotes—so learners can feel connected to real French-speaking communities, not just textbook sentences. Outside lessons, I keep my own French active through reading, films, conversation, and staying up to date with cultural trends in different Francophone regions. This helps me share modern, relevant language with my students, including the types of phrases and tones they are likely to hear in real life. Seeing learners grow from hesitant beginners to confident speakers who can express their own personality in French is incredibly rewarding, and it motivates me to keep improving my teaching with each new student I meet.

French becomes much less intimidating when students are given space to use the language in real situations rather than only memorizing rules. In my lessons, we work on speaking, listening, reading, and writing in a balanced way, while always keeping communication at the center. We explore essential grammar, core vocabulary, everyday expressions, pronunciation, and common conversation topics such as introductions, daily life, opinions, and plans. Instead of learning isolated lists, we build phrases and mini-dialogues that students can actually imagine using in real life, which makes the learning process feel purposeful and motivating. I adapt each lesson to the learner’s level and goals. Beginners practice simple sentence patterns, present-tense verbs, basic question forms, and short dialogues that build confidence in saying things out loud, even with mistakes. Intermediate students expand into more tenses, richer vocabulary, reading short texts, and expressing personal views in a more detailed way. Advanced learners refine nuance, linking words, idiomatic expressions, and accuracy in writing and speaking, often working with articles, audio clips, or short literary passages. Throughout, I correct gently, explain patterns clearly, and revisit tricky points in different ways until they feel natural. Learning French opens doors to new cultures, perspectives, and connections, and it also teaches patience, persistence, and flexibility. Students gradually notice themselves understanding more lyrics, signs, films, or conversations, which creates a real sense of achievement. They gain confidence not only in French, but in their ability to tackle complex tasks step by step. My goal is to make lessons feel safe, supportive, and enjoyable—a space where making mistakes is seen as a normal and valuable part of learning, and where every small improvement is genuinely celebrated.
