About Hamilton

School has been my top priority. Educating is my life's calling.

I am a UChicago graduate with a Bachelor's in Sociology, and a UChicago graduate student pursuing my Master's in Teaching. I have a lot of background writing for academic purposes about interesting topics. (My admissions essay to UChicago was about Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix--ask me about it!)

More than just a job, tutoring has been my hobby, my source of empowerment, and a personal calling card. While still in high school, I was hired as a group tutor for a Sociology course at my local college, while also serving as a peer tutor at my high school (Spanish, English, Math) and an AVID tutor at the local middle school (all subjects). At UChicago, I advised CPS high school students as part of a highly-selective college access nonprofit. As a graduate student at UChicago, I have tutored and taught students in all grades and all subjects. To date that makes 8 years of experience, at 13+ distinct grades (counting college as #13+), with mastery of multiple tutoring frameworks and tactics, for 150+ students--and a partridge in a pear tree.

For my whole life, school has been my top priority, and learning has been one of my strongest skills. I consider it my responsibility and my goal to help others develop their skills as learners as well.

Trust, understanding, and rapport are my top priorities as an educator. Before any teaching relationship takes place, we must trust and know one another! This helps enrich the learning experience for teacher and student. I give kind and honest feedback: I am never hesitant to give necessary encouragement, and coach on specific and clear areas for growth.

I base my teaching methodology on the needs and interests of my students. I open my sessions by getting to know my students first and foremost (e.g., learning style, favorite subject, favorite experience in school, specific learning needs). I use this information to tailor my instructional approach in a way that makes sense for the student.

There are two basic structures that I use to guide sessions: one is sponsored by the College Reading/Learning Association; the other is sponsored by UChicago's Urban Teacher Education Program. In meeting the student and assessing their needs, I will choose whether I will use CRLA's structure, UTEP's structure, or some mixture of the two.
