Though clever my son, who is now in year 11, has never been naturally motivated to study and put enough effort in his academic work. This worried me very much in regards to the GCSE exams ahead of us. I knew he had to step up to get good grades. At this point, I engaged with Aoife to tutor Rick for Physics and Chemistry which was one of the best things I could have ever done for my son! His predicted grade in Physics was a 6. Since studying with Aoife he has shown that he is capable of achieving a grade 9. This is incredible! In her tutoring approach Aoife first figured out how Rick works best and accommodated her teaching accordingly. From the every beginning she noticed there was something amiss with the speed of Rick's handwriting. Upon her advice I contacted the school about this. Tests revealed that my son's handwriting capability and speed was significantly lower than his own age group. He therefore qualified to use a keyboard instead of handwrite for the course work, including exams. An important problem which had been overlooked by me as a parent and the school for years, has now been highlighted and resolved solely thanks to Aoife. No longer stressing about not being able to write quick enough, a big weight lifted off Rick's shoulders. Aoife is not only very attentive to such details but also communicates well with my son. To begin with, Rick was very reluctant to work with a tutor. Ever since the first session with Aoife he has been looking forward to the next session as he sees how useful, and beneficial they are in closing his knowledge gaps and learning and practicing on exam techniques. Aoife absolutely goes above and beyond, identifies the needs, tailors the sessions accordingly, follows up with a suitable homework assignment. On his completed homework Rick always gets a very thorough feedback from Aoife, very helpful indeed in reinforcing his knowledge. Thanks to her Rick is motivated to do better and has grown confident to achieve a top grade and fulfil his potential. I first turned to Aoife because I was struggling to prepare for my PAT (physics altitude test for oxford), and because it’s quite a specific issue I struggled to find a tutor.
In the space of a few weeks I completed a lot of past papers with the help of Aoife and identified topics I needed to work on. I felt comfortable going through things with her as she explained things in detail, but also made sure I definitely understood the content by testing me with extra questions. I felt like she really went above and beyond what I was expecting, looking through questions before sessions and trying to give alternative explanations when I didn’t understand material I’d covered in class. She has a really great way of explaining complicated concepts in depth but in understandable terms, and I enjoyed working with her because she set a great pace that was challenging enough and kept me motivated to revise.
For example, after a year of maths and physics alevels I still couldn’t quite grasp concepts in mechanics like pulleys or circular motion, but now I consistently get good marks in questions about them which for me is an amazing accomplishment.
Even though my main focus was gaining experience in PAT papers and covering physics and maths content I wouldn’t get to in class; I found that my current grades in maths and physics at college also went up considerably.
Aoife gave me a lot of helpful guidance with regards to university admissions and my personal statement, which made me more confident in applying to top universities. And thanks to all her help I’ve now received an interview for Oxford, which I honestly didn’t think would happen.
