About Rebecca the Physio

I love my job as a physiotherapist and I recognise that it's not an easy learning journey - at least that was my experience. But here I am, a qualified and registered physiotherapist with 25 years of experience. Ultimately I enjoy assisting others to achieve success within their studies so that they have the confidence in their knowledge and skills to enjoy their professional role in the same way that I have. Having achieved my MSc in Health and Social Care I taught and supported learners through the Open Uni alongside my professional physio role. More locally I continue to teach and support through mentorship in my current role, which includes in-service training in either groups or on individual basis. I have supported many undergrad students on placement and enjoy inspiring knowledge and interest in the profession.

The university learning experience these days is a TOUGH GIG. Much of the content relies on self-directed learning with uni lecturers only offering limited and 'fair' advice often leaving learners with unanswered questions and a lack of confidence in their learning, knowledge and assignments (both content and presentation). I can help fill in the gaps in support and offer to do so at an affordable price. I have 25 years physiotherapy experience and have supported many students through the workplace, private mentoring and whilst working for the Open University. Learning is very individual and as such there is no 'one size fits all' approach and heavily depends on the individual level of learning. I can offer support to those: - Band 3/4 Healthcare support for those progressing their training and wish to obtain a qualification in therapy or nursing (7 years experience supporting at this level with the OU) - Who are applying to uni - needing guidance on how to apply, reviewing application or personal statement - Under grads at Uni - needing additional support in understanding either theory or practical elements - Post grads - looking for a more sound understanding of the area that they are working within Sessions I offer give you the opportunity to : - Confirm/consolidate your learning - Revise any topics you need, often for exam preparation - Discuss and help plan current assignments - Ask questions and seek advice on the topic of your choice - Help you prepare for placement/work experience - Discuss case studies to help develop your skills in the application of your knowledge into practice. I also offer review and feedback services for assignments of any health care related topic. If you are just wanting a review and feedback on an assignment. 1 hour session equates to 3500 word assignment I will return your work within 48 hours (I aim for 24 hour turnaround but state 48 hr to be sure I can fulfil my offer). All you would need to do is email me your assignment with original question and brief with marking criteria and I will do the rest, giving constructive feedback on the work and recommendations for any improvements, as appropriate. It's your learning and the approach taken will very much be focused on your need and requirements. I can present case studies, presentations, Q&A sessions and am open to other methods by request.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always had an interest in supporting the learning of others,
mainly as a result of my own experience of tutors, lecturers, teachers
all assisting and inspiring me on my learning journey. Now that I am in
a position where my knowledge and experience can help others I enjoy
offering the same support, that I enjoyed, to others.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

As a physiotherapist my main subject areas can be considered to include
anatomy, rehabilitation, clinical reasoning and academic writing to name
but a few. These subjects over lap with other health professional roles
and as such I have supported the learning or OT’s, nurses, radiographers
and sports therapists to develop their learning from both a clinical and
    academic (assignments) point of view.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have been lucky to have numerous role models within my learning. My
mum was a teacher and helped me see the wealth and benefits of learning
from a young age. At secondary school I met both good (and less good)
teachers – the good ones listened to my needs and supported me in the
way that I required as an individual as opposed to delivering a ‘one hat
fits all’ teaching style. I felt that the teachers who tailored their
teaching for me therefore understood me and that was an empowering
experience. Everyone can learn but we all have different ways of going
about be able to learn. At university I think I was more inspired by
the clinicians I worked with on placements than the tutors themselves
(sorry tutors!). As clinicians the patients we treat are people and as
such its the real world learning that taught me how to be dynamic with
my physiotherapy approach. Since qualifying I have had the privilege
of working with some exceptional colleagues – both qualified and non.
Each has inspired my learning in a variety of areas, both clinical and
personal. Learning never stops - we are surrounded by teachers, if we
are ready to listen and be taught
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Listening and assessing as to what learning is required. Identifying
the pace and level of teaching that will facilitate learning.
Challenging the learning that has been delivered as a means of
    consolidating that knowledge.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My school days were a long time ago now...and whilst I learnt a great
deal at university learning physiotherapy, I know that I learnt
infinitely more once I was qualified. For any undergrads / post grads
doing the degree – its a tough gig to get through the formal degree
learning but its worth the effort. Once qualified and in a job the
learning feels much more relevant and applicable. Its not necessarily
easier once you qualify but when you are actually delivering
physiotherapy, you are directly helping your patients and the
satisfaction in that makes all the learning very rewarding experience.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Physiotherapy and health care is an ever evolving discipline, with
developments and research changing and improving the best practice
advice available. It is a challenge to keep up with updated guidelines
but an important one all the same.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I just love my profession as a physiotherapist and am motivated to
inspire the same interest in others who are on a similar learning
    journey that I have enjoyed.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I support students with the learning that they want/need in the way that
they need it in a friendly and approachable manner.
