My approach to teaching reflects how learning is an intrinsic human activity that continuously occurs, interweaving inside and outside of formal educational institutions. Experiential learning acknowledges that interactions with nature, other beings, and institutions provide individuals with the tools to make sense of the world and appropriately situate themselves within it. Philosophically, José Ortega y Gasset’s perspectivist doctrine similarly assumes knowledge and reality are always interpreted through different standpoints. This means an individual’s perceptions of his/her reality are ontologically and epistemologically valid. It is crucial, then, to appreciate the lived experiences of students and instructors alike. It is my objective to guide learners into reflection and observation of their personal experiences in order to develop new skills and/or new ways of thinking. Without this necessary point of reference, students may often find themselves unable to extrapolate the full meaning and nuances hidden amidst abstract textual readings or discussions.
