About Stanley
Hi! I'm Stan- an enthusiastic, friendly tutor with a passion for history.
I have always found history really interesting (so much so that I ended up studying it for my undergraduate degree!), and much of this can be attributed to the teachers who made learning fun and engaging. The great thing about history is that there is an element of it that everyone will enjoy- it is just a matter of finding that one period, ruler, movement, or even style of analysis that you find enjoyable. For me, this was the Normans!
Having had tutoring myself, I understand that sometimes we need a little extra support- whether that is a space to ask questions that you may not want to in class, go over information that doesn't make sense, run through ways to answer questions, or simply try a different teaching style. The important thing about history is that its not just knowing the facts, but also how to apply them, and use them to make effective arguments. Having a tutor who can help develop those arguments whilst answering any questions and providing additional information will provide a real boost to achieving great grades in your exams. My aim is to work with you to find where this extra support is needed, and slowly build up from there.
I endeavour to provide a relaxed environment where students can receive this extra support, and hopefully develop a real curiosity and passion for history, like myself.

My undergraduate degree taught me that discussion is key to forming quality historical arguments- whilst evidence is important, it is the ability to justify and communicate this evidence effectively that really elevates an argument. As a tutor, I provide a friendly, safe and conversational environment for students to practice this critical skill, without any of the pressure found in more intense school environments. Having studied GCSE, A-Level, and undergraduate history, I understand the challenges!
My aim is to meet students at their current level and, understanding their preferred ways of learning, come up with appropriate action to elevate their desired knowledge or essay skills. Whether you are a visual learner who enjoys creating timelines and making mindmaps, or you prefer a more conversational environment where we can brainstorm essay structures and develop critical thinking skills, I will structure our lessons so that you gain the maximum benefit from them.
I have studied a broad range of topics, including: the Crusades, the Medieval World, the Renaissance, the Early Modern World, the Witch Hunts, the Tudors, the development of political ideas, Global Empires (Romans, Chinese, British, French, American etc.), 19thC Britain, 19th and 20thC America, Early 20thC Europe.
Lesson lengths are an hour (online)- I am happy to provide the first 30 mins free for us to discuss a plan of action.
