About Hakim
I’m currently a senior at Johns Hopkins University and a former member of the Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team. Balancing academics, high-level athletics, and fatherhood has shaped the way I communicate with the world. It has given me patience, clarity, and most importantly taught me how to connect with people at very different stages of life. Chess has been one of the most valuable assets in my life. It has allowed me to build meaningful connections across economic, language, and geographic barriers, and that’s why I love teaching it. Seeing someone gain a deeper understanding of the game, no matter their background, is what motivates me most as a coach.

I’m a chess coach who focuses on teaching the game conceptually rather than through memorization. I help students understand how to open games with purpose, recognize tactical ideas, and develop clear plans in the middlegame and endgame. I’ve taught players as young as elementary school age and as old as their 40s and 50s, and I adapt my approach to meet each student where they are. My coaching frames chess through the lens of life itself, emphasizing patience, anticipation, adaptability, and decision-making.
