About Cal
*Currently in Victoria, BC* I am a full-time French tutor. I love learning languages and sharing the ones I know. I've been doing language-exchange with people from around the world for almost a decade and have traveled in Europe and East Asia. I studied French at UVic and have a Master's degree in French. I love reading old French novels and watching movies in French. Living in Quebec, I also get to explore an interesting part of the world Francophonie. My name is Cal from Canada and I've been studying French for twenty years and teaching it for two. My first-hand understanding of the struggles of French learners allows me to give useful comments and build a better understanding of grammar. In addition to native English speakers, I am familiar with languages like Farsi, Japanese, and Korean, and can sometimes help those learners adapt to French from their starting language. I use a practice-focused approach to prepare you for talking about everyday and professional situations (meetings, commutes, grocery shopping, family) using targeted grammar. This approach is based on the language training provided to Canadian Federal Government employees. These lessons are designed for any adults of any level (A1 to C2). They can accompany other French training and the method is flexible.

Speaking a new language is meant to be a fun and engaging activity. Cal has the balance of playfulness in conversation and grammatical understanding. I feel ease and comfort learning with him.
Cal is a great french tutor and helped prepare me for high level french exams at my workplace that I passed. He's reliable, communicative if plans need to change, and very knowledgeable of the french language and french nuances. It's helpful that Cal can explain rules and regulations and tricks in English - this can help anglophones get a better grasp of certain tricky concepts. Highly recommend!

Jokes aside, Cal has saint-like patience and makes every session interesting. After years of struggling with gendered nouns and verb conjugation, I’ve finally found a tutor that keeps me engaged enough to actually progress forward!
MerciI’ve had the pleasure of being tutored by Cal for over a year. As a Government of Canada employee with management aspirations, I needed to ramp up my French skills quickly to achieve a BBB designation. Over a period of 7 months, under Cal’s twice-a-week tutelage, I was able to acquire this designation! Cal speaks at a pace where I can keep up, and his anecdotes made learning French fun and interesting. I cannot recommend Cal enough, and I will continue to study with him as I work towards my CBC levels.
