About Richard

I am an experienced, native English language teacher. I have the level 5 Cambridge CELTA Certificate as well as the Certificate IV in TESOL and a bachelor's degree from The University of Sydney.

I have a huge passion for helping people improve their English. I work very hard to ensure my students understand concepts and apply their new skills so they feel comfortable using English every day in Australia. I have helped my students get their dream job in Australia, strengthen their relationships, be more sociable and meet new people.

I help my students speak confidently, correctly and fluently. The main focus is on improving pronunciation and grammar so you can sound like a native speaker. I know all of the tricks and I have being doing it for over 10 years.

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

Yes, I am a native English speaker, born and raised in Australia.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Fictional character Frasier Crane from the comedy sitcom 'Frasier' is extremely articulate and witty. He is a Harvard graduate and often corrects other people's grammar, which is ironic given that the actor who plays him is Kelsey Grammar. Fraiser was modelled on Orson Welles, a highly intelligent filmmaker and actor.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

Puns and other wordplay. "I have a split personality," said Tom, being frank.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

I can communicate with friends, family and new people in different countries, which is important because I love travelling.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Pronunciation. Practice with a native teacher who gives you immediate feedback and shows you the right techniques.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was doing a classroom lesson to get my CELTA certificate, everyone started laughing when they realised why I spent 5 minutes helping them pronounce "sheet" correctly 😉
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I lived in Europe for 2 years (2014-2015) and taught in a language school. I learned other languages myself and I met many students and friends from different countries. That helped me to teach grammar and pronunciation the best way depending on the student's native tongue.
