About Nick
Servus! I'm Nick de Carlo, but you've seen that already. If you're reading this, you're interested in learning German, which is great! I love teaching it and sharing what I love so much about the language.
I've earned my PhD in Germanic languages and linguistics from UCLA and am really in love with the language(s). My passion in Germanic languages is mostly language change and dialects, but teaching can go any which way. If you're interested in the history of the language, we can talk about that. If you want to know more about the dialect of where your ancestors are from, let's do it!
In non-German news, I also play the tuba. It's what I've used to help me integrate into life in Germany, Austria, and elsewhere. I've got a strong music background as well, and if YOU'RE musical, well, you're in luck! There are a lot of parallels between learning a language and music.

So, learning a language is different for each person. It's important for me that we work together to find what motivates YOU to learn German (or any other language I teach). I enjoy answering all types of questions about the language, and one thing you'll never hear from me is "that's just the way it is, you have to memorize it". There's always a reason for something, and if you want to know WHY, I've got you covered!
The lessons I enjoy teaching can be at any level (A1-C2). I tend to work best with working professionals/university students, but I've taught all school grades from 6th to 12th in different countries (US, Germany, Austria, N. Macedonia). So, teaching kids isn't out of my range!
A typical lesson includes review, new material, and, if you're having a rough day, we can just shoot the breeze in German, no stress. Nevertheless, I can also organize the lessons to keep you on your toes! It really depends on the student.
