About Olivia
I recently graduated from UC Berkeley, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Molecular Environmental Biology and a Bachelor’s of Science in Microbial Biology with honors. In my time at Cal, I worked in two research labs, the first on freshwater ecology and the second on microbial biology. It was that second lab in which I conducted my Honors Thesis research. Additionally, I spent a summer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute as a summer intern working on laser Raman spectroscopy on deep-sea invertebrates, and a semester in French Polynesia on the island of Mo’orea conducting ecological research and doing fieldwork. My other activities included being a member in Epsilon Eta, an environmental service and professional development organization, where I volunteered with many environmental organizations in the East Bay Area. I also worked as a Student Lead at the campus gym, bridging students, staff, and administration. All in all, I’ve had so many rich experiences cultivating not only my knowledge and skills in biology, but also in communicating and working with others. I’m excited to share my background, knowledge, and experience with students.

My lessons will revolve around what you are learning in class, what class or standardized biology tests you’re studying for, or just what you’d like to dive deeper into! Every instructor has their own way of and framework for teaching material which is important for the tutor to understand when helping teach. Therefore I will go through the material from the book and/or class you are using, and potentially recommend some other resources as is needed. These lessons are tailored to the student. Everyone learns differently and has different areas they’d like to focus on. An initial meeting would be talking through the student's needs and wants for tutoring, looking at the material and figuring out what style works best for them. My favorite mode of studying is dialogue and white-boarding (digital or physical) to illustrate and communicate concepts. But lessons can look anything like guided text-reading to help on or review of assignments or atypical lecture on a concept. My areas of expertise are in cell, molecular, and microbiology (love the small stuff), but I’ve also had plenty of training in basic to organic chemistry, ecology, and environmental biology. I’m passionate about these subjects and am looking forward to diving into them with potential students!
