I have tutored at-risk students in the juvenile detention system. I learned patience and empathy when working with this group of challenged youth. I have tutored ESL students and students at the college level. I have also tutored K-12 students, including SAT and ACT prep. When teaching ESL students, I learned how to help them both speak and write better in the English language, building their confidence and vocabulary. I also enjoyed teaching both high school and college students how to write academic essays.
My teaching philosophy is constructivist; knowledge is constructed through engagement between the learner and the “teacher.” I practice a method where knowledge and understanding are a creation between student and instructor; both individuals are creating and inventing their personal meaning of the information that is disseminated by different sources. I implement a highly engaging type of teaching in which students are part of a collaborative environment where understanding and questioning of the material is encouraged. I am also highly qualified in creating lesson plans that are inspired and imaginative when teaching a class on Spirituality and Writing. Motivating and encouraging students to excel beyond expectations in both reading and writing is my first priority.
Because I have a Master's in Fine Arts, I feel that I can inspire creativity in my students who have trouble with academic composition by adding a certain flavor and zest to their instruction. I also have an inclusive understanding of literature that expands beyond classics to literature that young adults would enjoy.
