About Eric

I’m an English tutor with a BA and an MA in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University, where I specialized in medieval studies. I work with students to strengthen their reading, literary analysis, and writing skills.

I know how challenging it can be to make sense of a difficult text or turn a promising idea into a clear, persuasive essay. My goal is to offer thoughtful, patient support that helps students gain confidence as readers and writers. I welcome questions and take students’ ideas seriously wherever they are in the learning process.

Whether you’re navigating a demanding English course or looking to become a more confident writer, I’d be glad to work with you!

My approach to teaching focuses on helping students engage meaningfully with literature and communicate their ideas effectively through writing. I believe that genuine interest naturally translates into better academic performance. My primary goal as a teacher, therefore, is to foster curiosity and excitement for literature. Rather than guiding students toward "right" answers, I'm far more interested in giving students the tools to generate insightful observations about a text and develop those observations into persuasive arguments through writing.

The teaching methods I encountered while earning my BA and MA in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia inform the content and structure of my lessons. In a typical tutoring session, we might practice formulating questions about a text, testing reading strategies with those questions in mind, and turning observations into arguments through writing exercises. My lessons also emphasize strategies for efficient reading, effective writing, and time management—all essential for success in challenging academic environments.

Based on the needs of the student, this template can be adjusted to focus on writing, drafting, editing, critical reading, or analysis of either poetry or prose from any period. My teaching methods are particularly well suited to students of college or high school age, but the lessons can be tailored to suit a variety of ages and skill levels. Whether you're looking to succeed in an English class, write an important essay, develop general study strategies, explore medieval literature (my specialty!), or simply become a better reader, I'm here to help!
