About Jonathan
My name is Jonathan, and I am a recent English graduate from the University of Manchester. Throughout my academic journey, I developed a deep appreciation for literature, critical thinking, and effective communication. Outside of academia, I enjoy writing articles and short stories, which allow me to explore new ideas, perspectives, and styles of expression.
My passion for English began in Year 9 when I realised that the subject offered something unique: the freedom to think creatively while engaging with complex ideas. Unlike subjects that often focus on finding a single correct answer, English encouraged me to question, interpret, and develop my own arguments. It showed me that literature is not only about analysing texts, but also about understanding people, societies, and the world around us.
One of the reasons I love English is its connection to so many different fields. Through literature and language, I have explored topics ranging from history and politics to medicine, philosophy, and law. This interdisciplinary nature has helped me become a more curious and open-minded thinker, and it is something I aim to pass on to my students.
As a tutor, I strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas and developing confidence in their own interpretations. I believe that some of the strongest essays come from students who are encouraged to think independently and engage deeply with texts. My goal is not only to help students achieve excellent grades, but also to help them develop the analytical and communication skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond.

My lessons are discussion-based, giving students the opportunity to explore and develop their ideas in a supportive, judgement-free environment. Through in-depth conversations about books, articles, journals, and plays, students learn to think critically and build more sophisticated interpretations, helping them produce stronger responses in exams.
I also place a strong emphasis on exam technique and structure. Many teachers focus primarily on content, but I teach students the frameworks and strategies that examiners reward most highly. These proven structures provide a clear pathway to achieving top grades and allow students to communicate their ideas with confidence and precision.
