About Mary
Hi! I have recently left my job as a High School Science and Math Teacher to pursue a role working in a pharmaceutical laboratory! Though I am fascinated by my new career, I have missed being able to share the knowledge that I have passionately sought for myself.
Throughout my time as a teacher, I learned how to tailor lessons to different learning styles because everyone picks up on things in a different way!

As a tutor, my approach revolves around making complex concepts understandable and engaging, tailoring each session to the needs of the individual. Here’s a breakdown of my method:
Teaching Method and Techniques:
Personalized Learning: I start by assessing the learner's current knowledge and identifying specific areas where they need improvement. This helps in creating a tailored approach that addresses their unique needs and goals.
Active Engagement: I use a variety of techniques to keep lessons interactive, such as asking questions, encouraging discussions, and using real-world examples. This helps reinforce concepts and make the learning process more dynamic.
Incremental Learning: Concepts are broken down into manageable chunks and built up gradually. This scaffolding approach ensures that foundational knowledge is solid before moving on to more complex topics.
Visual Aids and Analogies: I incorporate diagrams, charts, and analogies to simplify abstract concepts. Visuals can often make complex ideas more tangible and easier to grasp.
Practice and Application: Hands-on practice is crucial. I provide exercises and problems that challenge the learner to apply what they’ve learned. This helps in solidifying their understanding and developing problem-solving skills.
Feedback and Reflection: Regular feedback helps learners understand their progress and areas for improvement. I also encourage self-reflection to help them become more aware of their learning process and strategies.
Typical Lesson Plan:
Introduction (5-10 minutes):
Brief review of previous material or introduction of new concepts.
Outline the objectives for the session.
Instruction (15-25 minutes):
Explanation of the new topic using a combination of verbal explanations, visual aids, and examples.
Engage the learner with questions to check for understanding.
Practice (20-30 minutes):
Work through problems or exercises related to the topic.
Provide guidance and support as needed, encouraging the learner to work independently where possible.
Review and Feedback (10-15 minutes):
Go over the exercises completed during the session.
Discuss any difficulties encountered and clarify any misunderstandings.
Closure and Next Steps (5-10 minutes):
Summarize key points covered.
Set goals or provide recommendations for practice before the next lesson.
What Sets Me Apart:
Adaptability: I adjust my teaching style to fit the learner’s preferred method of learning, whether that’s visual, auditory, or kinesthetic.
Focus on Understanding: Instead of rote memorization, I emphasize comprehension and application of concepts, ensuring that learners can use their knowledge effectively.
Encouraging Curiosity: I foster an environment where questions and curiosity are encouraged, helping learners develop a genuine interest in the subject matter.
Holistic Support: I offer support beyond just academic content, including study strategies, time management, and test preparation techniques.
I have previously worked with students from elementary to high school, but can also pass on knowledge to those pursuing an undergraduate degree.
