About Rahana
I am adaptable, resilient, and inventive: having delivered a full timetable remotely throughout the national lockdowns means that I am highly adept with a wide range of educational technologies and I am very comfortable in providing pupils with high quality remote learning. I have also been able to work collaboratively with my team to produce materials and resources for home learning such as learning booklets for both KS3 and KS4.
I am very invested in ongoing professional development, and I have undertaken a wide range of training and development courses, including marking and moderation, conducting research and effective skill - based training all of which enable me to work towards continuous improvement of my pedagogy and practice. One example of this is when I taught the text ‘In the Sea there are Crocodiles’ to Year 9 students, this unit encouraged students to explore the text creatively and freely without following the usual writing formats such as, PEE and PEA. Students were successfully able to transfer their critical thinking and creative ideas on to paper. I have also held extra – curricular activities for students for example, reading club to instil the love of literature in students. I also ran a successful writing club which provided an opportunity for students to enhance their creative, transactional and analytical writing skills. I was able to liase with organisations such as, BBC Young Reporters and Poetry by Heart and enter students into national competitions. This was highly successful and students developed confidence, public speaking skills and a love for writing. Engaging in research has also helped me to understand other ways in which I can raise student’s literacy levels and attainment. Through research and practice, I have found that encouraging and promoting the use of specific subject terminology within class discussions can increase both students’ literacy levels and attainment. Also, ensuring that students are aware of the importance of using standard English instead of slang within structured talk and class discussions has improved student’s literacy levels both orally and in their written work. I have also taken responsibility for the attainment of my Year 11 pupils, ensuring that they achieve their target grade or higher through the use of regular intervention classes, differentiation and positive reinforcement.

I am a highly effective English practitioner in my third year of teaching. My lesson observations have been consistently excellent, with my strong behaviour management and positive relationship with pupils being repeatedly highlighted as a strength.
My experience in different educational settings – has afforded me considerable opportunity to utilise and develop a portfolio of teaching and learning strategies such as, effective behaviour management, time management, marking and moderation and increasing engagement, progress and attainment of all students. I have delivered well planned and creative schemes of work across both key stage three and four, which have yielded impressive results in terms of both pupil feedback and summative grades. I have been able to support learners of all abilities to achieve and progress through the use of appropriate scaffolding and differentiation. I ensure that opportunities for stretch and challenge are always implemented within my lessons, ensuring that students can aim and achieve their full potential. My subject knowledge is good, I am confident with many of the texts studied at both KS3 and KS4 level and can deliver content exceptionally well. I ensure that students are engaged and are curious about the text that they are studying and adopt a sense of joy whenever they delve into a different text. I strive to foster a sense of enjoyment and passion for literature through all aspects of my lessons by ensuring that there are opportunities for students to engage in structured talk and class discussions, providing visual aid to learners through the use of pictures and videos, also maintaining a safe classroom environment for students to confidently share their thoughts, ideas and opinions on a specific text.
