About Joe
Hello! I'm a CELTA-qualified English teacher with over 10 years of experience teaching learners of all ages in both the UK and Japan. I hold a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing and Critical Practice (2:1) and have worked in schools, language centres, and one-to-one settings — both in person and online. For the past four years, I’ve specialised in delivering engaging and effective online lessons tailored to each student’s goals and learning style. In addition to ESL, I offer informal creative writing and literary analysis sessions for beginners, intermediate learners, or those looking to unlock their creative potential. These classes focus on storytelling, character creation, theme exploration, and reading literature and poetry with insight and confidence — all shaped around the student’s interests. I have particular expertise in modern literature, fantasy fiction, poetry, and lyric writing. Alongside teaching, I’ve worked as a writer, guitarist, music producer, and performer in the creative industries. While I don’t teach music, my background gives me a strong understanding of artistic expression and narrative, which I bring into my writing-focused sessions. Outside the classroom, I enjoy hiking in the countryside, reading widely (especially philosophy and fiction), and watching good films — preferably with a strong story.

• 10 years' teaching experience. • ESL students will be engaging in a course tailored for the individual. It will be built around all areas of language, including: Grammar, speaking, vocabulary, writing and guided conversation. This will involve using professionally made materials and activities as well as personalised activities designed for the student's needs. • My focus is on adult ESL students, but I will consider younger students too, as I have taught students of all ages. • Creative writing students will receive guidance and instruction on areas such as: Narrative and structure, developing characters, thematic concepts, writing styles, narrative voices, critical analysis of texts and more. This will be tailored to the student's areas of interest, with a strong focus on how to generate new ideas, and the use of various techniques that can help to build stories. Especially helpful for beginners and younger learners, but this can be studied at any age. Some extra reading may be required, but this will depend on the student's area of interest. • The creative writing classes are informal, and are not aimed at achieving a qualification. However, GCSE or A-Level reading and analysis can be incorporated into the lessons if required. • Lessons are 1 hour long as a standard time. Prices are between £25 and £40 per hour, dependent on the type of class.
