About Keyla

I'm Keyla! I graduated from the University of Florida with double Bachelor of Science degrees in Zoology and Marine Science. I adore the science realm, particularly the natural sciences and everything within marine science and oceanography (physical, chemical, geological, and biological).

I am a patient, friendly, energetic, and experienced tutor who tailors all of the lessons to the learning style of the student. I tie in real-world experiences into my lessons to show students how applicable the information is to their lives and/or the world. Also, I am able to break down complex topics that are easy to understand.

I currently work in an environmental toxicology lab as a research scientist studying PFAS working towards publishing my first-authored paper. Besides research, I am the co-founder of an organization that was founded in 2014 whose mission is to spread awareness about plastic pollution through education, outreaches, cleanups, and political and art advocacy. Through my organization, I have over 5 years of education experience.

I am a patient, friendly, energetic, and experienced tutor who tailors all of the lessons to the learning style of the student. I tie in real-world experiences into my lessons to show students how applicable the information is to their lives and/or the world. Also, I am able to break down complex topics that are easy to understand.

I tutor in the natural sciences and everything within the marine science realm (physical, chemical, geological, and biological). Also, I tutor elementary and middle school math.

I use alternation and application teaching methods and techniques when I tutor. I think it is important for a student to first gain an understanding of what they are learning. I do this by initially asking the student to explain a topic in the subject of their choice that they are having difficulty in. Afterward, I use interactive learning methods where I will explain the lesson and throughout it, I will ask the students questions to see if they understand the material. These lessons will have problems that students can do or they can answer the questions to any homework assignment that they are given.

Before the tutoring session is over I will ask the student to give me an overview of what they learned. I believe that summarization at the end of what they learned without looking at notes or work problems helps students gauge what they obtained in the lesson and know what their strengths and weaknesses are.
