About Michelle
My name is Michelle, and I have a diverse educational and professional background that uniquely positions me to make a significant impact in multiple fields. I graduated from Waikato University with a Master's degree in Design and spent several years working as a graphic designer. During this time, I honed my creative and technical skills, developing innovative design solutions and working on a variety of projects that required both artistic flair and strategic thinking.
Currently, I am pursuing a Master's degree in Nursing at Waikato University, driven by my passion for healthcare and my desire to make a difference in people’s lives. This transition from design to nursing reflects my commitment to personal growth and my belief in the importance of a holistic approach to education and professional development.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have gained practical experience as a support worker and art tutor for autistic individuals. These roles have allowed me to develop strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals with diverse needs. My background in design has also enabled me to incorporate creative and engaging methods into my tutoring, making learning accessible and enjoyable for my students.
Combining my expertise in design with my nursing education and support work experience, I bring a unique perspective and a versatile skill set to any role. I am passionate about using my knowledge and abilities to contribute to the well-being and development of individuals and communities, whether through creative expression, education, or healthcare.

Student-Centered Learning: My teaching approach is student-centered, focusing on the unique needs, interests, and learning styles of each student. I believe that engaging students in the learning process and encouraging them to take an active role in their education fosters deeper understanding and retention.
Interactive and Hands-On Activities: In subjects like art and design, I emphasize practical, hands-on activities. For example, in an art lesson, students might engage in drawing, painting, or sculpting projects. In design, they might work on digital design projects using software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. For Chinese language lessons, I incorporate interactive activities such as conversational practice, role-playing, and cultural immersion exercises.
Step-by-Step Guidance: I break down complex concepts into manageable steps to ensure that students can follow along and build their skills gradually. This is particularly important in art and design, where mastering fundamental techniques is crucial.
Feedback and Reflection: I provide regular, constructive feedback to help students understand their strengths and areas for improvement. I also encourage students to reflect on their own work and progress, fostering a growth mindset.
Incorporation of Technology: I use digital tools and resources to enhance the learning experience. For instance, in design classes, students use graphic design software, while in Chinese language classes, I use online platforms and apps to reinforce vocabulary and grammar skills.
Creative Expression and Critical Thinking: I encourage students to think critically and express themselves creatively. In art and design, this involves exploring different styles and techniques, while in Chinese, it involves understanding cultural nuances and applying language skills in real-world contexts.
Typical Length of a Lesson:
Art and Design: Typically, lessons last between 60 to 90 minutes. This duration allows enough time for instruction, hands-on practice, and feedback.
Chinese Language: Lessons usually run for 60 minutes, providing ample time for vocabulary, grammar, conversational practice, and cultural activities.
