About Colm

One of the main issues the students struggle with is how heavy the content for history can be. The heaps of conflicts, resolutions, wars, names and exam techniques can be overwhelming and hard to learn. I, too, had once struggled to find a way to learn. However, I overcame this boundary, which inspired me to help others overcome it and take away that self-doubt some may have. As I have always said, I believe everyone learns differently, and that’s why I am motivated to help those who struggle in the subject area not only know and understand the history being taught but also help them discover their way of being able to learn history effectively and accurately.

About the lesson

I prefer to take an approach that varies across students. I believe that every student learns differently, and that’s why I aim to be able to teach them in a way they would understand personally through a variety of techniques. Some of these can include the typical flashcards, mind maps, timelines etc, but it can also be debating, casual discussions and more. I like to teach in a way which makes what I teach fun and personal to the student. At times, a student can know but struggle to answer an exam question or not fully understand the technique. That’s where I can also help in that exam practice. Depending on the student's request, My sessions can be one or two hours. I have had previous experiences in tutoring people, some of which had learning disabilities such as ADHD and ADD and have been able to teach them in a way that they can find engaging. My lessons are for any pre-university age in 20th-century history. I’m also able to teach the 20th-century history on China.

I started taking lessons with him in Year 12 when I was struggling in history Alevel and predicted a B and now I’m about to graduate with an A. When I didn’t know how to memorise concepts from the Cold War Colm was able to explain it to me in a simple way and show me his techniques of how I can learn the material better. He has been the only tutor that adapts to my learning style and played the biggest factor in helping me improve quickly before my Alevels!
