I want to discuss regarding cell biology 1. Types of Cells There are two main types of cells: A. Prokaryotic Cells • Example: Bacteria • Features: • Smaller and simpler than eukaryotic cells • No nucleus; genetic material is in a single loop of DNA • May have plasmids (small extra rings of DNA) • Some have flagella for movement B. Eukaryotic Cells • Examples: Plant and animal cells • Features: • Have a nucleus that contains DNA • More complex than prokaryotic cells • Contain membrane-bound organelles (e.g., mitochondria, ribosomes) 2. In an animal cell, the nucleus is the control centre that holds the cell’s genetic material (DNA) and directs all cell activities. Surrounding the nucleus is the cytoplasm, a jelly-like fluid where most of the cell’s chemical reactions happen. The cell membrane surrounds the cell and controls what substances can enter or leave, acting like a selective barrier. Inside the cytoplasm are mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of the cell, producing energy through aerobic respiration. Also scattered throughout the cytoplasm are ribosomes, which are responsible for making proteins by joining amino acids together. Plant cells share all the structures found in animal cells but also have a few extras. They have a cell wall made of cellulose that provides strength and support. Inside plant cells are chloroplasts, which contain a green pigment called chlorophyll and are the site of photosynthesis—where the plant makes its own food using sunlight. Plant cells also have a large permanent vacuole filled with cell sap, which helps keep the cell firm by maintaining internal pressure. Prokaryotic cells, like bacteria, are simpler than animal and plant cells. They do not have a nucleus; instead, their DNA floats freely in the cytoplasm in a single circular strand. They may also have small loops of DNA called plasmids, which often carry useful traits like antibiotic resistance. Prokaryotic cells have a cell membrane and a cell wall, but their walls are made from different materials than plant cell walls. Some bacteria have a tail-like structure called a flagellum that helps them move. 3. Microscopy and Cell Study • Light Microscope: Used to observe larger cell structures • Electron Microscope: Provides higher magnification and resolution. Cell Division and Growth A. Mitosis (Cell Division for Growth & Repair) • Produces two identical daughter cells • Used for growth and replacement of damaged cells • Steps: Interphase → Prophase → Metaphase → Anaphase → Telophase → Cytokinesis B. Stem Cells • Embryonic Stem Cells: Can turn into any cell type • Adult Stem Cells: Limited differentiation (e.g., bone marrow) • Used for medical treatments like growing new organs. Transport in Cells Cells move substances in and out by: • Diffusion: Movement of particles from high to low concentration (e.g., oxygen in lungs) • Osmosis: Movement of water across a membrane from dilute to concentrated solution • Active Transport: Movement against the concentration gradient using energy (e.g., root hair cells absorbing minerals).
