About Kyoko
I studied French and German at the University of Cambridge. As part of our studies, we spend our third year abroad. I lived inFreiburg, Germany, for a year, where I spent half the year studying the Organ at the Hochschule (equivalent of a conservatoire). For the second half of this year, I did an internship at the Centre Culturel Freiburg, an institution designed to teach French language to German native speakers. This also allowed me to combine my loves of language and culture, something that I continued when I returned to Cambridge for my final year. I hope to impart my passion for languages and literature when tutoring, creating an encouraging and supportive environment that allows students to achieve their full potential.

Hello, I'm a recent graduate from the University of Cambridge where I studied French and German. Alongside my linguistic studies, I decided to focus on the literature of each language, gaining skills that I believe I can transfer on to tutoring English literature and language.
When planning lessons with a new student, I try to be as flexible as possible for the very first lesson, allowing myself to be directed by the needs of each student. Having discussed and worked out what areas the student would most like to work on or improve, I plan a few lessons at a time. While this allows a structured and long-term approach, it also includes the possibility for flexibility, should the student's priorities change. During sessions, the focus could be a specific grammar point, which would include a worksheet for the student to take away as a memory prompt. There would also be exercises to help consolidate the student's learning. Alternatively, we would look at translation passages or comprehension questions to expose students to real-life examples of the language. I often found this useful in my own learning, as it motivated me, reminding me that the skills I was developing were also applicable in the real world. I aim to include variety across my lessons, avoiding an overly dry programme of grammar, whilst ensuring that the student has a comprehensive understanding of the necessary building blocks of language.
Although gaining language skills is a rewarding experience in itself, I am also aware that most students are preparing for exams. As such, I research the exam board of each student before beginning lessons, enabling me to tailor their learning and use relevant ressources. This has worked well for me in the past, and I have experience tutoring for IB, AQA, and Edexcel exam boards.
I have been tutoring online for a year and a half and have found it extremely rewarding. I believe that my experience working with different pupils of different ages has developed my ability to work flexibly, offering the most effective and efficient support possible. I find too, that tutoring one on one enables me to create a particularly supportive environment, where a student can ask all questions that come to them without fear of judgement. As well as teaching online, I have experience working in a school, where I tutored music theory to choristers from the ages of 8 to 13. I was also able to gain experience in the classroom, helping with Latin lessons. Most recently, I have worked as a pastoral member of staff on a music course, again broadening my experience working with children and young adults. I believe that these experiences make me well-suited to provide academic support across all ages, offering a rigorous approach to learning, but in a warm and welcoming environment.
