About Elena
I am a student at the University of Birmingham studying a for a degree in Modern Foreign Languages, specifically in French and Russian. I have begun the study of the Russian language at University and so I have been faced with the new found difficulties of studying a language from scratch! I am also lucky enough to have grown up in a bilingual household with a Spanish father and an English mother, and have therefore grown up observing the various miscommunications and breakthrough understandings that languages can provide.

My teaching methodology will depend firstly on the student and their preferred way of learning and interacting. Something that I have seen clearly throughout my time in language class rooms, is that people engage with languages in a large range of different ways and it is not a 'one size fits all' environment. Given that learning a language engages both listening, speaking and writing I will try to use interactive methods of teaching to engage the senses in a variety of ways. Memorising verb endings and rules is important, but I also think the 'de-coding' side of languages is equally important as it allows the student to develop their confidence in reacting to the constant spontaneity and unpredictable character of a language. My preferred tools of teaching are listening comprehensions, reading comprehensions, grammar exercises and conversation. Through this range of exercises I hope to help the student become an all rounded linguist with a 'switched on' mindset which can react to the many obstacles learning a language can throw in your way.
