About Shirleen

My journey with English began long before I started teaching it. Growing up, I quickly realized how powerful language can be not only as a tool for learning, but also as a bridge between people, cultures, and opportunities. That passion led me to Harvard, where I’m currently a graduate student, and it’s also what inspires me to share English and literacy in ways that are fun, creative, and practical. Outside the classroom, I’ve worked as a writer, creating blogs and content for major companies. That experience sharpened my ability to simplify complex ideas and communicate them in a clear, engaging way a skill I now bring into my lessons with students. But what truly defines me as a tutor is my commitment to community. In Los Angeles, I dedicate time to helping people in my neighborhood strengthen their English skills, whether they’re recent immigrants learning to navigate daily life or professionals striving to advance in their careers. Seeing the confidence my students gain is what motivates me every day. For me, teaching isn’t just about grammar rules or vocabulary lists—it’s about building confidence, unlocking potential, and making learning an enjoyable journey. Every student has a story, and I see my role as a guide who helps them tell it in the clearest, most authentic way possible.

English

As a Harvard graduate student, I’ve developed a teaching style that makes English and literacy both fun and effective. My approach blends interactive learning with practical application, so students don’t just memorize rules—they actually use the language with confidence. I often incorporate storytelling, real-world examples, and creative exercises to keep lessons engaging and relevant. Teaching Method & Techniques I combine traditional literacy instruction with modern methods like active discussion, role-play, and multimedia resources. I tailor lessons to each student’s needs, focusing on reading comprehension, grammar, writing, and speaking fluency. I also emphasize building confidence—helping students feel comfortable expressing themselves in English, whether in academic, professional, or everyday settings. Typical Lesson Plan A standard lesson usually starts with a warm-up activity to break the ice and spark curiosity (such as a short article, video clip, or prompt). Then we dive into the main focus—this could be reading comprehension, structured writing, or conversation practice. I always end with a reflection or quick exercise that lets students apply what they learned immediately. What Sets Me Apart What makes me unique as a tutor is my ability to make learning personal, engaging, and approachable. I don’t just teach rules; I connect lessons to real-life situations, so students see immediate value. In addition, my experience writing blogs for major companies gives me a professional edge in teaching writing skills for business and academic purposes. Beyond academics, I’m passionate about community service—I actively help people in Los Angeles improve their English, which keeps me deeply connected to the needs of diverse learners. Who My Lessons Are For My lessons are designed for students of all levels—from beginners who want to build a strong foundation, to university students polishing their academic writing, to professionals seeking to improve workplace communication. Whether it’s preparing for exams, advancing in a career, or simply gaining confidence in everyday English, I customize lessons to fit each learner’s goals.
