About Connor
I am a PhD student in epidemiology and MS student in biostatistics at the Harvard School of Public Health. Previously, I obtained a BS in microbiology from the University of Georgia, a MPH in epidemiology from the Yale School of Public Health, and trained as a cancer statistician at the University of Pennsylvania. I am a cancer researcher with over ten peer review publications (and counting).
I was a peer tutor at the University of Georgia for two years in biology and biochemistry courses, and I learned student-centered teaching methods in a pedagogy course. At Yale University, I was a graduate Teaching Assistant for two years in biochemistry and microbiology, including as the Head TA for biochemistry. At Drexel University, I was an adjunct professor of biostatistics, teaching my own course in the design and analysis of clinical trials. Soon, I will be a teaching assistant at Harvard.
I am passionate about teaching and helping students have "lightbulb" moments. As the recipient of incredible education opportunities myself, I'm hoping to help others become confident intellectuals and to achieve their academic and professional goals.

My primary teaching method involves 3 steps. 1) Ask students to tell me what they know about a concept. During this conversation, it becomes easy to identify their knowledge gaps. 2) I review concepts to fill in their gaps, using a variety of teaching modalities to complement students' learning styles, including drawing visuals, reviewing diagrams, using metaphors, and repeating keep points. 3) After, I ask students to again tell me what they know about a concept, to observe if gaps were appropriately filled. I also ask students "exam" style questions, to get them to engage with material in a way books cannot. For example, if the concept is cell respiration, I might ask, "What would happen to cell respiration if oxygen was not present? What would be the consequences of ATP production if protein X was inhibited?" These questions allow students to think about concepts beyond what lectures or books present and deepen their understanding of the material.
With 5 years of teaching experience working with 200+ students, I've seen countless students have "lightbulb" moments when using this approach.
