About Theresa
My name is Theresa, and I am a Harvard undergraduate studying Psychology with a minor in Anthropology. Originally from Brazil, I moved to the United States at 16 on a UWC Davis Scholarship to attend boarding school in Connecticut. I am native in Brazilian Portuguese, bilingual in English, fluent in Spanish and advanced in French. With experience in international and academic environments, I strive to create supportive and engaging lessons that help students build confidence and communicate more effectively in English.

My Approach as a Tutor
Since I started learning English 7 years ago and live in the US, I have extensive experience learning and teaching English as a second language. Because I’ve personally gone through the process of becoming fluent in another language, I understand the challenges students face and aim to make learning both effective and encouraging. :)
Teaching Method and Techniques
My teaching style is student-centered and conversation-based. I focus on helping students develop confidence in speaking while also strengthening grammar, vocabulary, and listening comprehension. Depending on the student’s goals, lessons may include guided conversation, reading and discussion, pronunciation practice, and targeted grammar exercises. I also like to incorporate real-world materials such as articles, music, or short videos (including stuff based on your interests) to make learning engaging and practical.
A Typical Lesson Plan
A typical lesson begins with a brief conversation to warm up and assess how the student is doing with the language. From there, we may work on a specific skill such as pronunciation, grammar, or writing. I like to introduce new vocabulary and concepts in context and practice them through dialogue or short activities. We usually end the lesson with a brief review and suggestions for practice outside of class.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
What sets me apart is that I have experienced the process of learning English from the inside. I understand what it means to navigate a new language and culture at the same time, and I try to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. My background in psychology also helps me adapt my teaching to different learning styles and keep students motivated, and my academic achievements (such as getting full scholarships for boarding school and to Harvard) are a consequence of my passion for learning and helping others.
Who the Lessons Are For
Although I am open to teaching beginners, my lessons are ideal for advanced learners who want to improve their conversational English, pronunciation, and overall fluency. I work especially well with students who are preparing to study abroad, improve their academic English, or become more confident speaking in everyday situations.
