About Maryann
I believe it is important to help students feel comfortable, for them to know it is okay to make mistakes in order to learn, and that learning can be fun even when the topic might be challenging. I hope my students know I will be patient and encouraging and that I plan to progress them in a systematic way that does not feel overwhelming. I want my students to know they can develop the skills to be a better reader and hopefully one day have a love of reading.

My lessons would be designed to meet the ability level of the learner. For elementary grade reading instruction lessons would be based on a structured literacy approach by employing multi-tiered instruction following screening, strategic intervention such as word identification, phonemic awareness, spelling, morphology and orthography, comprehension and fluency lessons. When deficits are identified, the appropriate interventions will be utilized.
My sample lesson plan for a 1st grader could include several minutes each devoted to word study (letter naming, decoding of several words), word cards for vocabulary words of high frequency, word list reading for automaticity, sentence reading, written word work, and passage reading for comprehension work.
I believe my style of teaching to be positive, encouraging and patient and I would like my students to feel proud of their progress. I would prefer to tutor students from K-Grade 6.
