Hello! I am studied International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science. I think there has never been such an important time to study international politics: especially when current international crises are considered.
In order to have the skills to study this subject, I picked GCSEs and A-Levels that taught me the necessary academic rigour and skills. Personally, I found having a tutor during this process to be incredibly beneficial and reassuring during this stressful time. I would love to be able to help my students achieve the same. I am incredibly excited to see how they improve and develop over the sessions. Whilst I studied International Relations, my tutoring speciality is Modern History: I have studied this consistently since 2012.
I have experience mentoring students: I currently volunteer for four hours a week at a school with a high proportion of students from a low socio-economic background. In these sessions, we talk about options for the future, carry out a number of activities designed to facilitate this and overall improve awareness of future careers. This mentoring experience has given me the knowledge to effectively communicate and tutor with a range of ages.
I will structure each session for each individual student. Every student has different aspirations, motivations, strengths and weaknesses thus what works for one student may not work for the other. Before beginning the tutoring sessions I will speak to the student and identify how they best learn. Personally, I am a visual learner who works best from repetition but of course I can cater to any preferences.
Once we have identified the key problem areas for the student, as well as their strengths and most importantly their end result, I will create a structured programme that best tackles these. I will prepare a set amount of topics to go over in each session, ensuring the student fully understands before we move on. To track progress and the memorisation of knowledge, I will begin each session with a quick recap: not only does this ensure we are achieving progress but also if the student has discovered they no longer understand a certain section we can tackle this quickly and effectively. Tackling exam questions is also an important part of the learning process: ensuring the student can deliver an exam-worthy response.
I believe the best way to encourage learning is encouragement itself. Positive reinforcement and a friendly, and of course professional, environment is the best way to make the student feel comfortable enough to let me know when they are struggling
