About Devon

I am an experienced Ontario educator with 18 years of classroom teaching experience and a strong commitment to helping students become confident, capable learners. I hold a Bachelor of Education, a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Studies and Sociology, and a postgraduate certificate in Reading and Literacy. I am also a qualified Reading Specialist, Special Education Specialist, and Integrating Technology Specialist.

Throughout my career, I have supported children with a wide range of learning strengths, needs, and educational goals. I have extensive experience teaching reading, writing, comprehension, spelling, organization, and foundational literacy skills. My approach is patient, encouraging, and personalized. I take the time to understand how each student learns best and provide clear, structured instruction that makes challenging concepts feel more manageable.

I believe that students make the greatest progress when they feel safe asking questions, making mistakes, and trying again. My lessons are welcoming, engaging, and carefully prepared to meet each student at their current level. I celebrate progress, build on strengths, and help students develop the skills and confidence they need to become more independent learners.

Parents and students can expect dependable communication, professional preparation, and lessons tailored to meaningful learning goals. Whether a student needs to strengthen foundational skills, catch up with classroom expectations, complete school assignments, or seek additional enrichment, I am genuinely invested in helping them succeed.

About the lesson

My tutoring approach is supportive, structured, and personalized to each student’s learning needs. I use evidence-informed literacy instruction, including Science of Reading principles, explicit teaching, modeling, guided practice, and regular review. Lessons are designed to strengthen foundational skills while also helping students become more confident, independent learners. I explain concepts clearly, break difficult tasks into manageable steps, and use engaging texts and activities connected to the student’s interests.

A typical lesson begins with a brief check-in and review of previously learned skills. We then work on a targeted area such as decoding, reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, sentence construction, paragraph writing, or school assignments. I model the skill, practice it together with the student, and gradually help them complete it more independently. Each lesson ends with a review of progress and a clear next step.

What sets me apart is my 18 years of experience as an Ontario teacher, along with my qualifications as a Reading Specialist, Special Education Specialist, and literacy educator. I understand that students do not all learn in the same way. I create a patient, encouraging environment where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and build skills without feeling embarrassed or pressured.

My lessons are designed for students in Grades 1–8 who need support or enrichment in reading, writing, spelling, comprehension, literacy, organization, or general schoolwork. I particularly enjoy supporting students who have learning differences, attention or executive-function challenges, gaps in foundational literacy skills, or low confidence in their academic abilities.
