About Sophia
Hi! I’m a 3rd year Physics major at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a strong background in advanced math and applied physics. I’ve spent the past five years tutoring and mentoring students, helping them build confidence and truly understand what they’re learning—not just memorize it. I like to make math and science feel clear and relevant. Whether we’re working through problem sets or connecting physics to real-world examples, my goal is to make every session focused, encouraging, and engaging. I want students to leave feeling capable and curious, not overwhelmed. Outside of academics, I spend most of my time outdoors—biking, hiking, with horses, or just exploring new places. I’ve been active in sports my entire life—gymnastics has always been my main passion, but I also played soccer and competed in diving during high school. Throughout high school, I coached gymnastics, which quickly became the highlight of my days. I loved helping young athletes grow in skill and confidence, and I’m grateful to still have lasting connections with many of the families and students I coached. I also love cooking and baking and playing board games with my friends and family. Growing up with two younger sisters (and many sorts of animals always around) taught me patience, adaptability, and a sense of humor—all of which I bring into my teaching!

My goal is to help students truly understand what they’re learning, not just memorize it. I focus on building strong problem-solving skills and showing how math and physics connect to the real world. I believe confidence grows from clarity, so I emphasize logical reasoning and steady progress over quick shortcuts.
In a typical lesson, we start by reviewing key ideas or homework questions, then work through examples together—breaking them down step by step. I encourage students to think aloud and explain their reasoning so I can guide them toward deeper understanding. Every session ends with a quick recap and practical takeaways to make sure concepts stick.
What sets me apart is my ability to make complex topics approachable without oversimplifying them. I combine advanced subject knowledge from my physics studies at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a patient, down-to-earth teaching style that helps students feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks.
My lessons are ideal for middle school and high school students who want to strengthen their math or physics skills, prepare for exams, or build long-term confidence in problem-solving.
