About Oceanus
Having little guidance or mentorship in my life, I graduated high school without much sense of direction. My interest in teaching ignited in my community college years where I truly discovered my love of learning; perhaps the biggest impetus was a conversation with my English professor in which I was encouraged to earn an English degree and come back to teach at the school. After studying at community college for five years (and working part time to pay rent and bills), I transferred to UC Berkeley on a scholarship and graduated in the Spring of 2020 with a 3.90 GPA. I have acquired several years of experience tutoring ESL at the English Studies Institute, career counseling at the UC Berkeley Career Center, and freelance tutoring with outstanding results. My passion for being of service to others drives me to always give my best to my students; their overwhelmingly positive feedback is a testament to the effectiveness of my approach.

My tutoring and counseling methods center mainly on developmental psychology. I focus on building trust and understanding my students’ strengths and weaknesses. By offering information in such a way as to allow space for my students to draw their own conclusions, I support them in strengthening their own sense of agency and empowerment—the most critical factor for long-term success. As the adage goes, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
