PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
My philosophy hinges on a professional relationship between the learner and the teacher. It hinges on the possibility of a dialogue in the classroom through rigorous proofs and refutations. It hinges on creation of mathematics. It hinges on the fact that Mathematics should have a meaning and a value to people. Mathematics as a result, should be human, historical, be situated and constructed.
In teaching approach, I am a constructivist. I believe in self-discovery by the learners. I believe in the use of real world examples and problems in the classroom. I am a proponent of problem based learning and problem solving in the classroom. I also emphasize on the mathematical processes. I encourage discussions in the classrooms.
I also believe that, they teacher is one of the many sources the learner may learn from. I also believe in engaging learners in experiences that challenge previous conceptions of their existing knowledge. I allow learner responses to drive lessons and seek elaboration on learners’ initial responses. I allow thinking time after posing questions. I encourage the spirit of questioning by asking thoughtful open-ended questions. I also encourage thoughtful discussions among learners. I encourage the use of cognitive terminology. I encourage and accept learner autonomy. I use raw data and primary sources along with manipulative, interactive as well as physical materials.
