About Chuwen

Hi, I’m Chuwen! I’m currently studying History and Politics of the Americas at UCL, and I’ve been teaching and supporting students since 2022. I studied Politics, Mandarin, Maths and History and A-level and achieved A*, A*, A, B and achieved all 7-9 in over 10 GCSES. What students often enjoy most about my lessons is that I create a friendly space to learn at their own pace—breaking down tricky concepts, encouraging questions, and celebrating progress along the way. For me, teaching isn’t just about getting good grades (though that’s important!)—it’s about sparking curiosity and helping students feel capable and motivated. Outside of academics, I’m passionate about dance, music, and performance, which helps me bring creativity and energy into my teaching.

I initially started teaching in 2022 as an Education Assistant for InterGreat Education where I assisted in fine-tuning lesson plans, organising teaching quality, and curriculum development. This inspired me to become a tutor myself and to use my own skillset to help my students to achieve their own goals and ambitions. My lessons are carefully planned yet adaptable to meet the needs of every student. Typically, the first thing I do is provide a brief summary of the last class to assess the student's understanding, then give an introduction to the topics and ideas discussed in the class with explanations and examples. Activities will involve guided practice, discussion, and independent exercises enabling students to practice what has been taught and encourage student-led activities. Additionally, I will vary the pace and content to match the student's confidence level--more guidance when needed, explaining in individual steps, or challenging them with extension questions. A summary is always provided, as are next steps to give students confidence in their progress when they leave. What motivates me most is to see students draw connections—in History, Politics, or other applicable courses—Between the content taught and real-world situations. What motivates me most is sparking curiosity as to how the past events and political decisions shape our world as we know it. To allow students to not only study the content of the subject but to apply their own thinking critically is most rewarding in teaching to me. I'd characterise my teaching style as supportive and interactive but also structured. I find that learning is most productive when students are free to ask questions and to experiment with ideas, so discussion and interaction are encouraged. However, precise frameworks, step-by-step approaches, and techniques are also important and offered to enable pupils to approach essay questions as well as exam questions with confidence.
