About Mark
I am a lifetime student of history, and the study of history is largely the study of ideas. Ideas have consequences, and while knowing dates and names is helpful, understanding causality - how ideas have shaped our world over time - is an indispensable skill. I have enjoyed social studies since I was in middle school, and I now hold an MA in History. As one who is naturally inclined towards teaching - helping others through the effective communication of ideas - I love coming alongside others to answer their questions or offer new insights.

My approach to teaching history challenges students to go behind dates and names to ideas. This requires critical thinking. In the words of L. P. Hartley, "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there." I want to help students think conceptually, and understand the importance of change, context, causality, and contingency. Historical thinking is a discipline that can be useful in any field and in any line of work. Developing this discipline makes one a better student and a better member of society.
- I focus on conceptual assessment. I begin by taking stock of what a student understands, not simply what they know.
- I want to help students reach their goals, which means working with them to identify these goals.
- Lesson plans will address areas where students desire a greater degree of competency, and while looking at history, theology, or philosophy from a developmental (story-like) standpoint, the goal is to give the student a greater degree of confidence in the subject, helping them do better in their academic studies or achieve their assessment goals.
