About Amanda
I am a high school history teacher with 20 years of experience teaching writing to AP and IB students in three states. My students have excelled on both AP and IB exams because of the way I teach them to write. I am currently an IB Coordinator and IB History HL teacher, was named 2024 Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year for my state (in addition to being a top-10 finalist for the national title), and I recently delivered a TED Talk on how we need to change the way we teach to better meet the needs of young people. I am finishing my dissertation, so I am practicing my own methods of essay organization every day, and I can tell you, they work!

First, we revisit structure. Argument has a formula, and without a strong foundation, the argument will flounder. So, we practice the structure using a benign topic, then practice analysis using facts about that topic. Once the structure is clearly understood, we can examine potential IB or AP exam questions, course exam questions, or research questions. Using the structure you mastered first, we can outline the essays, practice the analysis, and then work towards a successful paper. Once this type of writing is mastered, it can be adapted for use in any subject area, and for any purpose. We write to prove points, so let's do it well.
