About Joy
Hi! My name is Joy, and I am currently completing an Honors Specialization in Genetics with a minor in Psychology at Western University. I have a strong passion for science, math, and helping students feel more confident in subjects that can sometimes seem overwhelming or intimidating.
Throughout my academic experience, I have taken advanced university-level biology and genetics courses while also gaining hands-on research experience in a cancer research laboratory environment. These experiences strengthened not only my understanding of science and analytical thinking, but also my ability to explain complex ideas clearly and patiently to others.
I understand that every student learns differently, which is why I focus on creating a supportive, encouraging, and personalized learning environment. My goal is not only to help students improve grades, but also to help them genuinely understand concepts and develop confidence in their abilities. I know firsthand how stressful school and exams can feel, so I always aim to make lessons approachable, interactive, and tailored to each student’s needs and learning style.
In addition to my academic background, my experience working in customer service and coaching children has helped me develop strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. I am patient, adaptable, organized, and committed to helping students succeed at their own pace.

I am an Honours Genetics student with a minor in Psychology who is passionate about helping students build confidence and truly understand concepts rather than just memorizing information. I tutor biology, genetics, and math for elementary, middle school, high school, and introductory university-level students.
My teaching approach focuses on adapting lessons to each student’s learning style and pace. I understand that every student learns differently, so I aim to explain concepts in multiple ways using diagrams, practice problems, real-world examples, and step-by-step breakdowns. I especially enjoy helping students simplify difficult topics into manageable concepts that are easier to remember and apply.
A typical lesson usually begins with identifying areas the student finds challenging, followed by reviewing concepts together and working through practice questions collaboratively. I encourage students to actively explain their thinking so I can help strengthen both understanding and problem-solving skills. I also help students develop study techniques, organization strategies, and critical thinking skills that can improve performance beyond a single course or exam.
What sets me apart is my patience, adaptability, and ability to make science and math feel less intimidating. Through my experience in advanced university science courses and cancer research environments, I have developed strong analytical and communication skills that allow me to explain complex ideas clearly and effectively. My background in Psychology also helps me create supportive and encouraging learning environments where students feel comfortable asking questions and building confidence.
